4 Must Try Authentic Thai Dishes

Posted on

Thai cuisine runs the gamut from spicy to sweet, from refreshing to savory. Whether you're ordering takeout, in the mood for finding the perfect family restaurant, or simply want to try your own hand at constructing an interesting dish, you can't go wrong with any of the authentic Thai dishes listed.

Guay Teow Lui Suan

These spring rolls are constructed out of massive, thin rice noodles that strong resemble square tortillas. Generally, guay teow lui suan are filled with a combination of ground pork, lettuce, and carrots and served with a side of lettuce and basil that is meant to be eaten in tandem with the dish. More often than not, guay teow lui suan is also served with a bright green dipping sauce that invokes the trinity of of Thai flavors: sour, sweet, and spicy.

Gai Pad Pongali

If you're looking for a quick and dirty way to satisfy your craving for a curry dish, then a generous serving of gai pad pongali is something that you should consider. Gai pad pongali is a mixture of onions, peppers, tomatoes, and chicken that have been stewed in a thin yellow curry sauce and then served atop a bed of rice. What makes gai pad pongali a truly unique dish, however, is the addition of a cracked egg that is stirred into the dish before it is consumed. It is often topped with a large amount of parsley.

Guay Jab

This soup uses a fatty broth as its base and contains numerous thick and wide rice noodles. In addition, guay jab can also be served with lung, green onion, tongue and crispy pork skin. What truly separates this soup from other Thai soups is the fact that there is an almost overwhelming amount of black pepper in it. This dish is not for the faint of heart or those with a weak constitution for pepper.

Gang Jued

While guay jab might be a bit overpowering, gang jued is a soup dish that can be enjoyed by all. Not only is that the case, but it is also healthy for you. This dish utilizes a water broth that is flavored purely by its ingredients. It usually contains cabbage, minced pork, glass noodles, carrots, onions, tofu and is perfectly garnished with a bit of fresh parsley. Although Thai food often earns a bad reputation for being a bit greasy and fatty, dishes like gang jued prove that there is a healthier side to cuisine from Thailand.
